Committees

Awards Committee: Lisa Breslof, Lou Siegel, Meryl Kafka

The awards committee bestows honors in four categories at the annual conference for service and outstanding participation to NYSMEA; contributions to marine endeavors in the areas of science, education, research, social endeavors, and the arts; and  maritime literature or art.  Look for past award winners on our web site.

Conference Committee: Sarah Richards, Lisa Breslof, Meryl Kafka, Lou Siegel, and Tom Greene Members of the Conference Committee help to plan and carry out NYSMEA's annual conference, which often attracts over 100 marine educators during a weekend around the beginning of June.  We need volunteers both before the conference, to suggest ideas for themes, speakers, field trips, and workshop leaders... and during the conference, to help register attendees, set up exhibitors' tables, post signs, manage items during the silent and live auctions, and to generally help keep the conference running smoothly.

Finance Committee: Sarah Richards, Lou Siegel, Lisa Breslof, David Stolarz, Adam Riback

Membership Committee: Sarah Richards, Lisa Breslof, The Membership Committee assists in recruiting and welcoming new members and keeping track of the membership list.  Members also update and send out reminders of membership renewals and keep the email, address and telephone lists up-to-date and current.

Public Relations (PR) Committee:  Lou Siegel  The PR Committee works to promote NYSMEA and its mission.  As a member of the PR Committee, we need your help to draft and send press releases, identify ways to introduce NYSMEA to wide audiences, plan and execute events, and build partnerships.  PR Committee members are needed to attend events, such as conferences, networking parties, and exhibit shows on behalf of NYSMEA and spread the word!

Education Committee: Leann Winn  NYSMEA's primary goal is to educate others about our world of water, both fresh and salt.  The Education Committee reaches out to New York educators, those who teach Pre-kindergarten to lifelong learners, in order to promote marine education. Share NYSMEA opportunities and marine education techniques with formal and informal educators alike.

Fundraising Committee: Lisa Breslof, Mike Danza

In Memoriam:  Gene Ritter

Gene T. Ritter holds a 100-ton US Coast Guard Master Captain’s License. He has over 30 years of experience as a Commercial Diver and Dive Supervisor. He retired as a New York Union Dockbuilder in heavy construction with the New York District Council of Carpenters.  Gene has been - and still is - a community leader for many years.  He has been instrumental in many of the positive changes in his community.  Gene has been exploring the underwater world of New York Harbor for over 40 years.  He brought hundreds of historic artifacts into schools, community events, and other venues through his Research Diving Programs since 1990. He has brought his underwater discoveries to thousands of students throughout New York, in an effort to share his knowledge and love for the oceans, shorelines and estuaries.   Gene has appeared in numerous articles such as the New York Times, NY Post, Daily News, in trade magazines, the local press, as well as the network news, ABC, NBC, CBS, and NY1.  Among Gene’s underwater discoveries are the sunken remnants of Fort Lafayette—a Civil War Fort, under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.  He also discovered 14 thousand live anti-aircraft shells, possibly lost by the US Navy in 1954.  He also discovered the lost historic Dreamland Pier and Dreamland Bell in the waters of Coney Island. The discoveries created positive political and economic change for Coney Island.

Over the years he has received many awards for his outstanding contribution to the community. In 1990, former Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden awarded Gene with his first citation award for his Outstanding Contributions to the Preservation of Brooklyn’s History.
