Dear Friends,
We urge you to pay your $20 dues so that you can take advantage of these activities and other benefits of membership. We are looking forward to a great year! We hope to include virtual and in-person events. One example is the virtual NMEA Conference which was held on July 13-17.  We celebrated locally with an in-person visit to the new Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center.  (See details below.)
During August we hope to see you at the Bar-B-Que get together on August 7th and the Whale Watch on August 26th. In addition, we are planning two clean-ups for National Estuaries Week.  On September 26th we will be at Jones Beach and on October 2nd we will be at Kaiser Park in Coney Island.

Wow What a great conference!  Kudos to our own Leann Winn, and the other conference co-chairs. If you did not get to go during July all is not lost.  NMEA will be offering a post conference registration which will allow you to see and hear all of the dozens of great presentations.  Look forward to an announcement here, coupled with a discount NMEA membership.      https://www.marine-ed.org/conference/2021/agenda

July 17th was the final day of the conference and NYSMEA was proud to host an in-person field trip to the fantastic, new Energy and Nature Center at Jones Beach. Director Jeanne Haffner gave us a comprehensive tour of the new facility and a glimpse at the curriculum on which they are working. Followed by a beach clean-up and even a shoreline bike ride!  Be sure to check out the website https://www.jonesbeachenc.org/ and visit soon.  We are planning to make this one of our key venues for the NMEA 2022 Conference which NYSMEA will be hosting in July.

The signature event for The New York State Outdoor Education Association (NYSOEA) is the annual fall conference. Attended by educators, managers, directors, and staff of organizations from across the state and nation, the conference is an excellent opportunity for networking, attending workshops, participating in outdoor activities, and supporting outdoor education in New York State. As conference locations rotate throughout the five regions (Eastern, Metro, Northern, Western and Central), it also provides a great way to learn about various parts of the state.

DEC Environmental News
Queens County - Operation Low Tide

On June 10, after receiving multiple complaints of people keeping undersized marine species, shellfish from uncertified waters, and protected terrapins (commonly called turtles) during low tide, ECOs Veloski and Currey participated in Operation Low Tide, an enforcement initiative to combat the illegal taking of wildlife and shellfish in New York City. ECOs partnered with U.S. Park Police in and around Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. While patrolling the area, the Officers observed two individuals leaving the area with headlights, nets, and large totes. The Officers interviewed the subjects and discovered that two of the totes contained diamondback terrapins while the other totes contained blue crabs. In total, the subjects had captured 22 diamondback terrapins, which are a federal- and state-protected species, and 41 undersized blue crabs. The anglers were also in possession of more than the allowable limit of 50 blue crabs. Officers issued multiple summonses to the subjects for possession of protected wildlife, possession of undersized blue crabs, and possession of over limit blue crabs. All 22 terrapins and the many illegal blue crabs were safely returned to Jamaica Bay.
