  • Dolphin and whale watching aboard the American Princess
    Friday July 20, 2012, 11:30 am - 4:00 pm 
    This event was canceled due to storms, but will be rescheduled soon. During the trip, we should see dozens of dolphins, and for the past two weeks, watched juvenile finback whales lunge feeding. The special discounted price is $35 per person, rather than the $45.

  • Restoration Trip to Lousiana
    Wednesday February 22nd - Sunday February 26th
    Our second restoration trip to southern Louisiana was a great success! Our members restore Louisiana's wetlands and learned about the importance of the Gulf of Mexico, its seafood, its oil, and more.  Photos here

  • Restoring NY Habitats Webinar
    Thurs, Feb 2nd 1pm
    Experts joined our Webinar to talk about restoring habitats in NY!Talks focused on oyster reintroduction in the Bronx River, eelgrass plantings in our Bays, and streambank restoration along the Hudson River tributaries. 

  • December Holiday Dinner and Lecture

    Our lecture “Hurricane Irene: Lessons for the Northeast” was provided by Dr. Nicholas K. Coch from the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Queens College of the City University of New York.

    Sunday, November 13, 2011 
    Free tickets were available to members to explore the museum, including the new "Space" exhibition, IMAX, Planetarium Show, Frogs, Butterflies, or any permanent Hall.

  • Restoration trip to New Orleans
    February 22-26, 2011
    NYSMEA members travelled to the Gulf coast in Feb to help Louisiana Sea Grant and the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program with habitat restoration projects.   • Webcast: Our Land Affects our Waters
    February 9, 2011 at 2PM
    NYSMEA members attended a Webcast lead by Julianna Brush, a scientist at NOAA's Cooperative Oxford Laboratory in Oxford, Maryland. Brush spoke about her work assessing the health of aquatic animals in the Chesapeake Bay and how this relates to how people use the land (developed/ residential, farming, or mixed).  

  • Webcast: Exploring Long Island Sound
    Webcast Feb 16, 2011 at 7pm
    Larissa Graham, Long Island Sound Outreach Coordinator with NY Sea Grant talked about the problems that are facing Long Island Sound and some creative ways that you can incorporate these topics into your curriculum. If you would like to learn more about the resources that are available to educators, click here.

  • January 2011 meeting
    NYSMEA members met at the Waterfront Center (link to http://www.thewaterfrontcenter.org/) in Oyster Bay, NY and, after the meeting, had a tour of the Center. 

  • Trip to Jamaica
    From Jan 15-22nd, NYSMEA members joined the Long Island Marine Association (LIMA) for a trip to Jamaica. 

  • Atlantis Marine World
    On January 12, 2011, NYSMEA members explored the programs available at the Aquarium and aboard the Atlantis Explorer with the Long Island Marine Association. 

  • December 2010 meeting
    On December 4, our members, along with the Long Island Marine Association, met at Eisenhower Park Senior Center for our NYSMEA Holiday Party. After dinner, we had an exciting lecture from Sid Horenstein, geologist from the American Museum of Natural History about “The Origins of Fort Tryon Park”. 

  • November 2010 Meeting
    On Sunday, Nov 14th we met at the American Museum of Natural History, NYC for the Executive Committee meeting, a pizza lunch, and a tour of the museum’s new exhibition: “Race to the End of the Earth.” 

  • October 2010 Meeting
    On Sat, Oct 23rd we held our monthly meeting at Caumsett State Park, Huntington, NY. After the Executive Committee meeting we had a special treat-- a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) workshop with BOCES's own, Bill Monahan! We'll learned how to build our own and got to test them out! Check out the photos

  • September 2010 Meeting 
    In September, we held Committee meetings (no Executive Committee meeting) via conference calls. If you haven’t already joined a Committee, learn more about them by visiting our Committees Web page. We can always use more help, so read up on your choices and contact a Committee chair today! 

  • Hidden Harbor Tour: Brooklyn's Maritime Past, Present & Future 
    On September 14, 2010, NYSMEA and the Working Harbor Committee got together for a special Hidden Harbor Tour. We learned how the working harbor really works and what’s coming in the near future. For more information about this tour, click here

  • International Coastal Cleanup 
    On September 25, 2010 NYSMEA-sponsored a cleanup at Jones Beach State Park and other NYSMEA members participated in cleanups on the beaches of New York State, including Long Island Sound, the Hudson River, Atlantic Ocean, and the Great Lakes, Finger Lakes, and creeks and bays.
