Aquariums Climate Coalition
Aquariums Climate Coalition builds capacity among informal science educators/interpreters for communicating about climate change to public audiences.  The web site features past webinars as well as links to salient resources related to communicating about climate change with audiences in informal/non-formal settings. 


American Museum of Natural History 
Race to the End of the Earth vividly re-creates, through dioramas and period detail, how Amundsen and Scott prepared for their polar journeys. Nutrition, human endurance, equipment, logistics, and Antarctica's extreme weather were among the many factors that each team had to evaluate, often with far too little information to avoid tragedy and ensure triumph. The exhibition also spotlights modern science in the Antarctic and its potential.  Photographs, paintings, and rare historical artifacts from these expeditions place visitors in the midst of Antarctic exploration and research at the dawn of the last century. Highlights include clothing and equipment used by both crews during their journeys.

ARKive project
The ARKive project has unique access to the very best of the world's wildlife films and photographs, with more than 3,500 of the world's leading filmmakers and photographers actively contributing to the project, and giving ARKive unprecedented access to their materials.


Bayshore Discovery Project

Benthic Marine Algal Herbarium of L.I. Sound
The University of Connecticut has photographed original herbarium sheets featuring over 300 preserved benthic marine macroalgal species in the Long Island Sound. Visitors can search by phylum, family, or name. The site offers a list of definitions, and more.

Bronx River Alliance
The Bronx River Alliance serves as a coordinated voice for the river and works in harmonious partnership to protect, improve and restore the Bronx River corridor so that it can be a healthy ecological, recreational, educational and economic resource for the communities through which the river flows.The Alliance works in close partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to achieve these goals.

The Census of Marine Life
Census of Marine Life is a 10-year international effort undertaken in to assess the diversity (how many different kinds), distribution (where they live), and abundance (how many) of marine life—a task never before attempted on this scale. The Census stimulated the discipline of marine science by tackling these issues globally, and engaging some 2,700 scientists from around the globe, who participated in 540 expeditions and countless hours of land-based research.


Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring (CERCOM)

Located at the historic Blue Points Oyster Hatchery on the Great South Bay in West Sayville, CERCOM is a science research center and monitoring station at Molloy College. CERCOM is the only Horseshoe Crab captive breeding facility in the Nation and is committed to advancing knowledge and developing solutions to environmental problems in coastal ecosystems. In partnership with monitoring networks at the federal, state, local, and international levels, CERCOM provides the baseline data necessary to implement ecosystem management recommendations which assure the long-term health of estuaries on Long Island and focus attention on ecosystem health of estuaries worldwide.

Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life (COEJL)
COEJL is the leading Jewish environmental organization in the United States. Since its founding in 1993, COEJL has helped tens of thousands of Jews make a connection between Judaism and the environment. COEJL has put environmental protection on the agenda of the organized Jewish community and made the case to elected officials and decision-makers that protecting the environment is a moral and religious obligation. Today, COEJL represents 29 national Jewish organizations spanning the full spectrum of Jewish religious and communal life and serves as the voice of the organized Jewish community on environmental issues in Washington, D.C. and around the country. COEJL has its headquarters in New York and a national board of 23 trustees. COEJL is a program of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA).


Coastal Climate Adaptation Website
NOAA’s Coastal Climate Adaptation website makes it easy for coastal communities to find resources and engage in climate-related discussions. Visitors can find easy-to-understand climate change science information, examples of strategies, and plans and policies that communities can employ to address climate change impacts.


Coastal research and Education Society of Long Island (CRESLI) 
CRESLI was founded in the summer of 1996 by a group of experts in marine mammal science, environmental sciences, education and conservation and formed for the purposes of conducting research, providing educational experiences and promoting conservation of coastal ecosystems.

Coastal Studies for Girls
Coastal Studies for Girls provides high school sophomores with an opportunity to excel in science and technology in a community defined by academic, experiential and inspirational learning. CSG students engage in scientific inquiry, leadership development, critical thinking and stewardship while developing their educational and career aspirations. CSG strives to create a diverse ethnic, geographical and socioeconomic community for students and staff who celebrate success.

Winter bird survival challenge.


Cornell University published a feature package on efforts by Cornell Cooperative Extension, NYS DEC, and many other local partners and groups to restore shellfish to Long Island’s coastal waters. Creek Watch
Creek Watch is an application that enables you to help monitor the health of your local watershed. Whenever you pass by a waterway, spend a few seconds using the Creek Watch application to snap a picture and report how much water and trash you see. Creek Watch aggregates the data and shares it to help watershed groups and agencies track pollution and manage water resources.

Encyclopedia Arctica
The Encyclopedia Arctica is the typecript of a proposed 20-volume reference work on the northern arctic and subarctic regions. The project was begun in 1947 under the sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research, Department of the Navy but support was withdrawn in 1951 after 3-4 million words had been written. Subjects covered include archaeology, anthropology, botany, engineering, geography, geology, history, law (including international relations); language, medicine, meteorology, oceanography, religion, zoology, biographies, and special topics.


Encyclopedia of Life Learning and Education Group 
Teachers who are interested in having their students contribute their voices, ideas and content to the Pod cast of Life project. The Podcast of Life is a series of marine themed podcasts from the Encyclopedia of life, an effort to catalogue earth’s biodiversity.


Environmental Response Management Application
NOAA offers this public website that delivers near-real-time information in map format about the response to the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill. The online mapping tool is designed specifically for response activities where it is necessary to coordinate with various federal, state, and local agencies. ERMA is a web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) platform integrating the latest data on the oil spill's trajectory, fishery closed areas, wildlife, and place-based Gulf Coast resources into one customizable interactive map.

Executive Order for the Stewardship of Our Oceans, Coasts, and Great Lakes
President Barak Obama signed an Executive Order establishing the National Ocean Council. The Executive Order established for the first time a comprehensive, integrated national policy for the stewardship of the ocean, our coasts, and Great Lakes, which sets our nation on a path toward comprehensive planning for the preservation and sustainable uses of these bodies of water.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is one of America’s leading historic, cultural and educational institutions. The Museum features a range of interactive exhibits and events providing a snapshot of heroism, education, and excitement. IOOS Data Catalog
The Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) launched the first version of the IOOS Data Catalog to help people find ocean observations. The goal is to allow users to find the data they want, for the location and time period of interest. The catalog is a work in progress. IOOS will add more features and more observing assets as available.

Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Hudson River Field Station 

The Hudson River Field Station (HRFS) is a community hub for Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory’s local research, education, and outreach programs. The Hudson River Field Station’s core education mission is to facilitate place based learning opportunities of the Hudson through field investigations, allowing participants to explore and learn from the natural world. The HRFS website provides open source estuary education material, including lessons, activities, and videos that explore the biological, chemical, and physical characteristics of the estuary, the historical and cultural connections to the Hudson, the geologic history of the area, and more! The website also provides information about environmental stewardship opportunities that promote collective action and increase scientific literacy. 


Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center
Located on Main Street in Riverhead, along the Peconic River, Long Island Aquarium is Long Island’s full-scale Aquarium.Themed around the “Lost City of Atlantis,” Long Island Aquarium blends science and nature with myth to create an informative and entertaining environment for visitors of all ages. We offer a rich variety of experiences, from fascinating marine life exhibitsto Aquatic Adventures and educational programs.


Long Island Maritime Museum
The Long Island Maritime Museum was founded in 1966 and is located on the historic West Sayville waterfront. The museum grounds are now comprised of fourteen acres and nine historic buildings. Charged with the mission of preserving Long Island’s maritime history and heritage for educational purposes, the Museum has been welcoming visitors from all over the world for over 40 years. Inside one of the National Historic Landmarks, the Rudolph Oyster House, visitors can take a look at the industry and the families who made it work, as well as what happened to it and the aquaculture in the Great South Bay today.


Long Island Sound Study 
The Long Island Sound Study website offers teachers different ways to incorporate Long Island Sound into their curriculum and classroom.  The newly redesigned website offers a section for Educators, including a virtual tour of the sound, classroom resources, and links to other websites.

 

National Academies Press
The National Academies-National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council-are committed to distributing their reports to as wide an audience as possible. Effective June 2nd, PDFs of reports that are currently for sale on the National Academies Press (NAP) Website and PDFs associated with future reports will be offered free of charge to all Web visitors.

National Phenology Network
The USA National Phenology Network brings together citizen scientists, government agencies, non-profit groups, educators and students of all ages to monitor the impacts of climate change on plants and animals in the United States. The network harnesses the power of people and the Internet to collect and share information, providing researchers with far more data than they could collect alone.


New York Academy of Sciences 
The New York City Science Education Initiative offers science education professionals unique events and publications on such topics as classroom best practices, innovative education programs, and developments in science education policy. It also connects science teachers with the New York scientific community to promote understanding of current scientific discoveries and trends, while forging links between students, their teachers, and practicing scientists.

New York/New Jersey Baykeeper
NY/NJ Baykeeper is the citizen guardian of the Hudson-Raritan Estuary. Since 1989, we've worked to protect, preserve, and restore the environment of the most urban estuary on Earth - benefiting its natural and human communities.  Through our Estuary-wide programs we seek to end pollution, improve public access, conserve and restore public lands, restore aquatic habitats, encourage appropriate and discourage inappropriate development, carry out public education, and work with federal and NY/NJ state regulators and citizen groups as partners in planning for a sustainable future for the Hudson-Raritan Estuary watershed.

NCSR is a national clearinghouse for natural resource curriculum materials used by college faculty and high school science teachers. Materials cover major subject areas of environmental science and natural resources. They include fisheries, forestry, wildlife, and environmental science topics used in college programs.


Ocean Frontiers: An New Era In Ocean Stewardship

The Exploring Ocean Frontiers Educator Resources are based on the award-winning Ocean Frontiers film series by Green Fire Productions, portraying how unlikely allies — government, industry, science and conservation — are working together to find solutions that benefit ocean ecosystems and economies. The resources include secondary lessons and post-secondary discussion guides to engage students on an inquiry-based educational journey in ocean stewardship and facilitate discussions on collaborative ocean planning and the future of our oceans.

Ocean website
In celebration of World Oceans Day, the Smithsonian Institution announces a new website designed to inspire awareness, understanding and stewardship of the world’s ocean.  Visitors to the Smithsonian Ocean Portal can navigate their own exploration of the ocean by accessing a host of resources made available through the museum’s extensive marine science network and the best-in-class educational, scientific and intellectual assets.


OceanLink
OceanLink, from Bamfield Marine Sciences Center, offers information about the effects of climate change, marine biology education, and careers; answers to questions about the ocean and marine organisms; and more. Check out the archive for Ask a Scientist, the glossary, and more.


Oil Spill Resources
NAAEE's EE-Link website has many resources on the oil spill listed: curriculum for K-12 classrooms, news, real-time map links, background, government agencies' response, and more; more are added frequently.


Operation: Tectonic Fury
The JASON Project’s new geology curriculum for middle school, Operation: Tectonic Fury, features scientists and takes your students from the top of Mount St. Helens to the depths of a West Virginia mine in search of answers to Earth's geologic mysteries. The free, online unit offers research articles, inquiry-based activities, videos, games, and other multimedia, and allows students to investigate and analyze Earth's past, present, and future to unlock its geologic mysteries.


The Pew Environmental Group
Pew is a major force in educating the public and policy makers about the causes, consequences and solutions to environmental problems. Pew promotes strong conservation policies in the United States and internationally. Restore the Gulf
Created by the federal government, RestoretheGulf.gov provides the public with information on the response to the Deepwater BP oil spill, along with news updates and links to other governmental partners. The Assistance area contains information about claims and appeals, how to stay safe in and around the area, and also about how to volunteer with relief efforts. Other categories include news, response, and more.


Science Museum of Long Island 
SMLI is a not-for-profit science activity center located on the Leeds Pond Preserve in Nassau County. The Science Museum offers enrichment workshops for children on weekdays and during school vacations. We invite teachers and community leaders to learn about our field trips, as well as programs we can bring to your site. 


Sea Level Rise Conference Online

Teaching the Hudson Valley
Launched in 2003, Teaching the Hudson Valley (THV) helps educators discover, appreciate, and share the region's natural, historic, and cultural treasures with children and youth. THV's growing collection of free K-12 lesson plans uses significant Valley sites to teach virtually all subjects. Our grant programs help make it easier for teachers to get students out of the classroom and into the community. And, our summer institute and other programming offer rare opportunities for school and informal educators to meet and exchange ideas.


Tour de Turtles
Tour de Turtles is an educational journey through the science, research, and geography of sea turtle migration using satellite telemetry. This event follows the migration of ten sea turtles from their nesting beaches to their foraging grounds. The Sea Turtle Conservancy launches the event August 1, 2010; check the website for events, educational resources, and much more.

Urban Assembly New York Harbor School
A public high school founded in 2003 by The Urban Assembly, South Street Seaport Museum and Waterkeeper Alliance through New Visions for Public Schools and the New York City Department of Education.


Waterkeepers Alliance
The Save Our Gulf website has been established by Waterkeeper Alliance to coordinate the efforts of Gulf Waterkeepers who are fighting to protect the Gulf Coast, its communities and environment, from the devastating BP oil disaster. This site provides a constant stream of transparent information being reported from the front lines.


WaterLife: Sea Turtles and the Quest to Nest
NOAA’s National Ocean Service and Fisheries Service launched the second online educational game in the WaterLife series, Sea Turtles and the Quest to Nest. The web-based game encourages and explains loggerhead sea turtle conservation through a series of games and animations aimed at grade 4-7 students.

Watershed Academy Webcast Seminars 
EPA's Watershed Academy sponsors free webcast seminars. Webcasts are typically conducted on a monthly basis. Archived versions available from the website include topics such as climate change, lakes, wetlands, outreach and education, and more. 


The Water Front Museum and Showboat Barge
Our mission is to provide waterfront access, and promote historic preservation. We foster an understanding of the NY Harbor as a waterway carrying commerce and commuters as well as a means for culture and recreation.  Come aboard the “floating classroom and showboat barge,” the last covered wooden barge of its kind. Barge #79 is restored and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
